Excessive substance misuse, frequent school absenteeism, criminal behaviour. Sometimes an adolescent gets into such a fix that this is detrimental to both himself and his or her own future. To improve the future prospects, a change in behaviour is required. Multidimensional Family Therapy (MDFT) helps to achieve this change.
MDFT is an approved treatment programme for young people between the ages of 12 and 23 years, with (multiple) behavioural problems. MDFT is based on the assumption that not only the adolescent but also those around him or her and his or her general environment have an impact on his or her behaviour; for example, parents, family, friends, school, work and hobbies. That is why those around the adolescent are involved in the treatment, which ensures that the adolescent and his or her parents are more motivated to work together in order to find a solution. This improves or even eliminates the adolescent’s problem behaviour.
MDFT is an evidence based treatment programme. The programme is founded by Dr. Howard Liddle (Ed.D, Professor of Public Health Sciences, Psychology, and Counseling Psychology at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine). As counseling psychologist and family therapist, Dr. Liddle brought together interests in treatment research, intervention development, and therapist training. Dr. Liddle was inspired by and trained by Salvador Minuchin, Jay Haley and others at the Philadelphia Child Guidance Clinic in the mid-1970s. More information about the programme history can be found on the website of MDFT International.
The programme has been researched intensively in both America and Europe. The MDFT programme has also been ‘proven effective in line with strong evidence’ by the Accreditation Committee for Juidcial Interventions in the Netherlands. This is the highest level at which this committee evaluates interventions. More detailed information can be found under ‘research‘.
Youth Interventions Foundation (YIF) is the licence holder of the MDFT intervention in Europe. YIF provides training in MDFT and also issues the licences to teams and organisations allowing them to perform MDFT.
As well as providing the MDFT training for therapists and supervisors, YIF advises, supports and gives guidance to organisations that wish to implement MDFT and roll this out throughout their organisation. We would be more than happy to provide answers to questions, such as:
